Asbestos insulating board (AIB) or sometimes referred to by its trade name Asbestolux was a common construction material used from the 1930s up until it production ceased in 1980. Asbestos insulating board was used due to its excellent fire and heat insulating properties. AIB contained anywhere from 25-40% asbestos, usually of Amosite fibres, but also contained a Chrysotile / Amosite mixture in some cases. In older boards and in marine applications, Crocidolite was also used to produce AIB.

Because of the high quantities of asbestos present in AIB and their relatively porous nature, the potential for fibre release is very high if boards are disturbed.

AIB is in the mid-range in terms of friability on disturbance so it is reasonably likely to release asbestos fibres when it is worked on. Due to this, when working with AIB, a number of precautions should be taken. In most cases, removing any kind of AIB is classed as notifiable with the HSE and should always be carried out by a licensed asbestos removal contractor.
