Presented by ARCA to recognise member asbestos removal contractors’ who demonstrate consistently high standards on-site. The awards were acknowledged at the Association’s Annual General Meetings, held in October.

In order to obtain the Gold Site Audit Award, full contracting members of ARCA had to display best practices and consistent performance levels by completing six excellent consecutive site audits, with grades A-C on live audits.

The building which is Grade II listed is going to be refurbished once our works have completed. Set over 7 floors, including a large basement area, the building has multiple areas still containing asbestos.

The largest part of the project is the removal of thermal insulation to pipework and residues to walls, ceilings and floors. Merryhill has worked on many other listed buildings and was part of the reason this contract was won.

Working closely with the client, heritage organisations and the local authority, we have agreed our methods for removing the asbestos, whilst retaining as many of the original features as possible.

In addition to the thermal insulation to the basement, there are a number of other areas containing asbestos materials from insulation board, to floor tiles, cement bitumen products.

Aiming to build on the success of recent months, Merryhill has taken on 4 new employees across different functions.

Jonathan (Jon) Stratton joins as a new contracts manager, strengthening our operations team. Jon has a wealth of experience in the asbestos sector, having worked previously as a contracts manager, asbestos surveyor and analyst. More recently, Jon has worked as a project delivery manager, managing CDM projects across the south. Jon actually worked for Merryhill around 10 years ago and has now come full circle! We’re really pleased to welcome him back to Merryhill.

Trevor Gould has started as an additional asbestos supervisor. Trevor has worked in the industry for a number of years across the local area and spent time working on a self-employed basis. Trevor has hit the ground running and been working on some of our larger projects. Trevor brings a lot of experience to our supervisor teams and is settling in very well.

In addition to Trevor, we have also taken on a new asbestos operative. Harry Tompkins joins us from another provider having been working in the industry for just over 12 months. Harry is currently being mentored by our technicians, supervisors and his fellow operatives.

Lastly, earlier in March, Merryhill welcomed Leanne Dowland to our surveying team. Leanne is new to the industry and will be managing all of the administration associated with our surveying division. Leanne will also be responsible for ensuring our clients are quoted promptly and coordinating our surveyors’ diaries.

We have managed to adapt and overcome multiple issues, whilst keeping all of our people and stakeholders safe.

We’re very fortunate to have a very large office space. This has allowed us to maintain social distancing, way above the recommended 2m, without the need to install additional screens which can limit social interaction.

As our organisation has grown throughout the pandemic, we have made further alterations to our office layout to accommodate more people. Additional cleaning has become the norm, as has keeping doorways open using automatic closers in the event of a fire / emergency. We’ve set up 2 kitchen areas to limit people congregating and installed alcohol gel at all workstations and points of entry to our site. We check peoples’ temperature upon arrival and insist on visitors making an appointment and wearing a face covering.

Yes, it’s been a challenge. Yes, it involves a different way of thinking. Yes it involves buy-in from everyone.

But we’ve managed it.

Merryhill will be exclusively working with Aster’s Hampshire and Wiltshire offices.

The contract was awarded via a competitive tender process. Merryhill works on similar contracts for other housing providers and was well-placed to offer a quality solution to support Aster’s maintenance teams.

Our previous experience means we understand the importance of turning works around in a prompt and quality manner to avoid tenant inconvenience.

Merryhill will be offering both a licensed and non-licensed service to Aster, in addition to an emergency / out of hours facility.

We are really looking forward to working with Aster more closely over the coming months and forming a longstanding partnership with their teams, tenants and wider stakeholder groups.

Asbestos pre-Demolition Survey

In addition to the core survey types, asbestos re-inspections are also available for previously surveyed buildings. This re-inspection service is to ensure materials have not deteriorated or become damaged. The infographic below details each type of survey and their associated level of detail. There is a duty to manage asbestos for commercial or industrial buildings if they were constructed before 2000.

An asbestos management survey must be carried out and made available to any trades people carrying out maintenance. For major refurbishment works or if the building is being demolished then a survey must be completed prior before works begin.

The site is a single building, divided into sections comprising industrial machinery and commercial offices. The industrial plant is primarily powered by steam and there are a number of areas within the site that contain a number of asbestos-containing materials.

Highlighted in the report were a number of areas which required remedial action as soon as possible, these are now scheduled to be remediated early in the New Year. The consultancy service is something the client has utilised to better-understand their asbestos register and budget for any major planned remediation over the coming years.

To-date, the client has been pleased with the service received and is now much more aware of the need to manage their asbestos. The client has big plans for the site and removing asbestos as the building is refurbished is a top priority.
